Luc Besson’s Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets fell short of expectation in the US, nonetheless it appears that the film is not a complete flop this summer. Touted as the most expensive independent film ever made, the film took in a depressing 39.5 million dollars in the US. But there is hope for the film in China.
The film, which stars Dane DeHaan and Carla Delevingne as intergalactic crime fighters, seems to be doing well at the Chinese box office. The ill-fated film has tanked in most markets seems to be sitting high and pretty at the top of China's box office. The film held the top spot at the Chinese box office since last Friday. In the last 5 days, it has already surpassed its total income from North America.
Good news for the filmmakers but they still have a long way to go as the film cost over 170 million dollars to make and has barely scratched the surface in receipts of return.
