‘THE HITMAN’S BODYGUARD’ Never Hits Its Mark

What happens when you put Ryan Reynolds in a film with Samuel L Jackson? One might think a lot of comedy and humor, but sadly, The Hitman's Bodyguard is not that type of film. One can only dream of Deadpool taking on Nick Fury, but this film comes up way short especially in the humor department.

The Hitman's Bodyguard is from 2014's The Expendables 3 director Patrick Hughes. The film stars Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson of course, as well as Gary Oldman and Salma Hayek. For this non-Marvel story, a special agent (Reynolds) is hired to be a bodyguard and protect a hitman (Jackson), his swore enemy. Comedy and hijinks ensue as the two face-off when the hitman stops off to see his kick-ass wife (Hayek) make their way to court so that the hitman can testify at against an evil dictator (Oldman).

With two comedic powerhouses, Reynolds and Jackson, you would think this movie would be over the top funny; however, more often than not it misses the mark. Sadly, this film has Reynolds, who is the funnier of the two talents, cast as the straight man. This leaves the funny to fall on Jackson’s shoulders, who let's face it has a dry sense of humor. Surprisingly these two work well when it comes to executing stunts and action sequences (Yes, there are thrilling to watch). Mostly likely, they picked that up from all their time in Marvel films, but the true comedian in the film is Hayek! Her appearance in the film is brief compared to her male counterparts, but still very memorable. Nonetheless, Oldman, like most of this film, is miscast, underutilized and underwhelming. Overall, the film isn't horrible, but it isn't great either.
